and i think the big missing piece this year is immigration reform. the senate passed a bill with bipartisan support a long time ago, and the house has just been messing around. it looks like boehner kind of wants to do it an it also looks like a lot of people in his conference don't want to do it. but on this budget deal we've been talking about, i think the conventional wisdom is wrong about this. i am happy they are focused on trying to undo some of the damage that the sequester is doing to the economic recovery rather than focusing on long-term deficit reduction. we'll have time for that. i think that's an elite concern. if you're out there unemployed right now, what you want is more economic growth so you can pay your renting and buy food. and i think this modest change in the sequester will help a little bit. but i also think they have to do unemployment insurance and i'm worried that they're not going to. >> i'm sure, lois, you heard what senator wicker had to say. for example, because there are a lot of republicans that are saying all of this

one of the problems with japan, for example, it doesn't take immigrants. so they don't attract the world's smallest individuals like we still do, although we're trying to keep them out. you agree with bret? >> you know, i really don't. let me give you two examples that's not really my example. it's their examples. switzerland and lick ken stein, this is what came out of these two countries. their administrators said, look, we are life specks in the world economy. we are just a teeny little country and we understand that we have to be better than most if we're going to compete. so what both of those countries have done is make the concerted effort to emphasize mathematics instruction. they take upwards of eight hours of math a week. and they have innovative program to teach it. they understand that their kids are going to have to know this stuff. they drill them. they discipline them and they succeed. it's not rocket science. and i think if our schools understood that they were in the same competitive pool that we would try to do the same sort of innovation

classic example is immigration reform. we know that the majority of the american people think the system's broken. we now have a vote out of the senate both democrats and republicans voting for a common sense bill that would strengthen our borders that would fix the system and make it easier for talent to come here and work hard and become part of america. and that would hold companies accountable when they're hiring undocumented workers and taking advantage of them. and by the way would deal with the 11 million people who are in the shadows right now. now, we've got a majority of the american people who think it's a good idea. and we've got a majority of the senate including republicans who think it's a good idea. the only thing that's stopping it at this point is what i mentioned earlier. a faction in the republican house party that is resistant. i continue to be optimistic we'll get it done. i think john boehner is sincere in getting it done. >> didn't he just say we won't do it in '14, today? >> well, i think that ther

you got to have immigration reform. you have to have a competitive tax code. you have to do something about debt and education. this is all about problem solving. so no labels being at the sweet spot of where i think where the american people are and where they will be in the next couple of election cycles will therefore be in a place where most elected officials are going to want to be, not because it's the right thing politically, but because it's the right thing for this country. >> senator, you served in the senate for over a decade. how did things change when you were serving and how useful would a group like no labels have been early in the career or if they changed towards the end of the career in the senate? >> that's a good question. the senate has changed dramatically in the last 13 or 14 years. it's changed. it's just a completely different universe since my father's time. i'll tell you a story. it was 1968, my father was running for the first re-election. democrat in indiana. the republican leader at that time was illinois, came up to my father on
